How to Make Generic Macaroni and Cheese Taste Like Kraft

Easy way to make generic box mac n' cheese 100 times better

I've found that if you put the butter, milk and powder in a sauce pan while cooking the noodles, then add a little bit of shredded cheese near the end, you can make box mac n' cheese so much better.

OP, you've basically just described how to make homemade mac and cheese. You stumbled upon how to make a homemade cheese sauce, which is awesome. Take your saucepan, add ~1.0 cup milk, depending on how much sauce you desire. Increase temp until it's just about to boil. Add a small handful of shredded cheese and whisk until it melts into the hot milk. Keep adding little pinches of shredded cheese until it's as gooey as you desire. Manage the heat so it never goes all the way to a boil. Monterrey Jack melts really well, as does Colby. You'll want to add salt to your sauce, to taste.

Hmm, I've usually built homemade Mac and cheese on a roux. How's the texture with just milk and cheese?

level 2

Please make sure that YOU shred the cheese. That preshreded cheese will just clump into a ball.

My Mac and Cheese got so much better when I invested in a tin of Coleman's Dry Prepared Mustard. It's yellow mustard powder. For a box like the Kraft Mac 'N Cheese, I would add about a teaspoon full, a shake of hot pepper, and it was instantly so much better. When you get to making a roux (basically making your own cheese sauce) you are already making a killer dish that's insanely better than it ought to be.

I've found that after 3 glasses of wine, the meal tastes much better.

Stir in some black pepper at the end

level 2

Correction, keep the pepper grinder close by and every few bites apply more pepper.

And a pinch of garlic powder!

level 1

Make some ground beef and add it to your Mac and Cheese

level 2

Leftover chili works wonders!

no hot dogs, use instead kielbasa or smoked sausage, usually they are cheaper than a bunch of hormel hot dogs and give better flavor too

level 1

Bacon or cut up hot dogs. Cook the hot dogs with the pasta in the boiling water.

level 2

I like to buy what I call the "fancy hotdogs" with cheese or jalapenos or maple/bourbon in them. I slice them and fry them while my mac cooks. Tasty!

Also carmelized onions, or chopped chives. Yum!

level 2

Isn't 9 minutes a bit much? Do you drop it almost midway?

level 1

I like to add frozen peas or mixed vegetables to the boiling macaroni, then whatever cheese I have to the sauce (cream cheese works well).

level 1

I like to add cayanne pepper to mine. It is super good and the different color makes it look more appetizing.

level 1

you can also add canned tuna for cheap protein! a small amount of mustard for a flavour kick :)

level 1

As I always say, everything's better con queso.

level 1

Just skip the cheese powder and make your own cheese sauce.

A little bit of flour and butter to make a rous. Then add the milk until it just starts to boil. Then mix in the shredded cheese. To take it over the top add in a bit of cream cheese.

level 2

Just wanted to point out it's roux. Otherwise I definitely gotta try adding a bit of cream cheese!

level 2

Make sure when you are adding the milk that you mix it slowly into the roux, and ideally use room temp or warmer milk. Otherwise you are gonna get clumps of roux that muck up the sauce.
