Fix Continual Paper Jam on Brother Hl 2270dw
Brother Paper jam
I have a Brother HL-2170W and when the user prints a document (doesnt matter the program) the paper begins to print out and when about half the page comes out, it jams and I get flashing error lights on the Drum and Error lights. The user said that the Drum light has been flashing for months but that it has worked fine. Could a worn out drum cause the jams, or is there something else that might be causing the problem?
Here is what I would do:
1) clean/check the all feed rollers
2) look for foreign objects in the paper path
3) replace the drum
4) replace the toner
The other day I had a Canon D1180 that continually jammed right after the paper passed the fuser. Turns out it was a defective toner. What is interesting is that the toner was new and had worked for 3 weeks prior to causing any problems.

Printers can do fluky things when it needs something, whether it being toner/ink, drums...
It could be the problem but it could also be several things (fuser, paper tray, wheels...), won't know until you troubleshoot.

For the Brother printers, the drum can last a LONG time before it needs replacing.
You can log into the web interface and see the error history (found under the maintenance information tab). What error messages are you seeing on this page?

RoyL, this is going to sound dumb, but how do I get into the web interface? This printer is connected locally and thus doesnt have an IP address. I printed off the Network Configuration sheet, but I cant find what the web interface would be.

You can plug a network cable into the back of the printer and let it obtain an ip address by dhcp (this printer is also capable of wireless so you can connect that way too). Then you can print out a config report and see what the ip address of the printer is. Type the ip address in a web browser and you will be able to log into the machine. (I believe that the user name is admin and password is access.) Here is a direct link to the network user guide.

well after I got a network cable into it, unfortunatley now it "jams" before it even takes any paper into it...basically it starts to "spin up" and then errors out. I cant find the printer in the DHCP pool so I dont even think its grabbing and IP address to try to log into the web interface. I think I might be hosed unless someone can think of something else for me.

That was what I was assuming I was going to have to do, just trying to not spend money. I'm just going to get a generic brand drum and see if that solves it, as we have toner in the office to try. If not, I'll just tell the user that they no longer get a personal printer and they will have to use the main Konica Minolta printer we have (much better anyways). Thanks for all the help!
